It’s official: Summer is about to begin. Your clue (other than the really obvious fantastic weather) is that it’s time to register for the Bainbridge Youth Services (BYS) 4th of July Fun Run.

This will be the 36th annual Fun Run, representing many years of fun and running. The particular focus of this year’s event is promoting the health and well being of our youth. Visit the www.bifunrun.com website for nutrition, health, and fitness tips from BYS’ health partners: Harrison Medical Center, Island Fitness, Bainbridge Athletic Club, Ihland Garden Dental Care, and Center for Invisalign & Accelerated Orthodontics.

The Fun Run T-shirts feature artwork by Bainbridge High School sophomore Matthew Derry, winner of the 2015 Fun Run Art contest. Second and third place winners were freshman Jillian Ran and junior Rylee Dutton.

The event includes three runs:

  • 1 Mile Run/Walk at 9 a.m.
  • 5K Run/Walk at 9:15 a.m.
  • Kids Dash on Winslow Green (Madison and Winslow Way) at 10:30 a.m.

BYS will have a pre-registration Fun Run booth and a Sponsor Expo during the downtown Street Fair on July 3 at Winslow Green from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Race packets also will be available at the booth for pickup.

Event check-in on July 4 begins at 7:30 a.m. at Winslow Green. Ribbons will be awarded to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in each race for the male and female categories. All Kids Dash participants receive ribbons.

The preregistration fee for the 5K and the 1 Mile race is $25 with an optional T-shirt while supplies last. The Kids Dash preregistration fee is $5 with T-shirt while supplies last. The day-of-race registration fee for the Kids Dash is $10, and it’s $30 for the 5K and 1 Mile.

Fun RunAll proceeds go to BYS, which for more than 50 years has offered free and confidential counseling, scholarships and job services to youth and teens from ages 12 to 19. Ann Livengood, BYS Board President, explained just how important the Fun Run proceeds are: “Our ability to directly serve youth annually with 1,400 hours of free counseling would not be possible without the wonderful partnership between the sponsors and runners who support BYS and the services that so many youth and their families depend upon each year.”

Ready to run? Register here. Sign-up forms are also available at the BYS office in Room 103 of the 200 Building on the Bainbridge High School campus. You can also call the BYS office at (206) 842-9675.

If you can’t participate in the event but still want to donate, click here or mail your check to P.O. Box 11173, Bainbridge Island, WA 98110. Do you want to volunteer instead? Sign up at the BYS office or contact Fun Run Coordinator Karen West at (206) 999-1130 or km.west@comcast.net.
